How Summer of Code Works

Learn to code all summer.

Summer of Code is our new-student promotion — a 2-month introduction to Code Ninjas® West Katy for ages 8–14, just $299. It's the easiest way to start, and it's the door into our year-round CREATE program.

Your ninja joins regular CREATE sessions for 2 months, learns at their own pace, and earns their first belts. After Summer of Code, parents choose a monthly plan to keep the momentum going — or pause anytime.

A year-round coding journey

At Code Ninjas West Katy, we turn kids' love of games into real coding skills. Ninjas start with the games they already love — Minecraft, Roblox, mobile arcade games — and learn how to build their own.

Our CREATE program guides kids through a 9-Belt curriculum, moving from drag-and-drop blocks to JavaScript to C#. Each belt unlocks new projects, new skills, and more advanced gameplay.

White Belt Yellow Belt
Block Coding

Early belts use Microsoft MakeCode — drag-and-drop blocks that teach logic, sequencing, and variables.

Orange Belt Green Belt Blue Belt
JavaScript

Middle belts transition to real code. Ninjas write functions, debug logic, and build more complex game mechanics.

Purple Belt Brown Belt Red Belt Black Belt
C# & Unity

Upper belts build original video games in Unity — the same platform used by professional game studios.

The 9-Belt Path

Click any phase to see the belts inside.

Phase 1 — Block Coding (White & Yellow Belt)
  • White Belt: Introduction to coding with blocks. Ninjas learn the basics while creating their first projects.
  • Yellow Belt: Advanced block coding. Ninjas use tilemaps to build more complex games.
Phase 2 — JavaScript (Orange, Green & Blue Belt)
  • Orange Belt: Transition from blocks to writing real JavaScript code.
  • Green Belt: Intermediate JavaScript. Ninjas build advanced tilemap projects.
  • Blue Belt: Advanced JavaScript. Ninjas create complex, original games.
Phase 3 — C# & Unity (Purple, Brown, Red & Black Belt)
  • Purple Belt: Learn the Unity interface and intermediate game design concepts.
  • Brown Belt: Advanced programming with C# — meshes, ray casting, object-oriented principles.
  • Red Belt: Advanced game design. Scene management, world building, and the Unity Asset Store.
  • Black Belt: Custom game development from concept to delivery — storyboarding, prototyping, playtesting, publishing.

Older Ninjas (ages 12+) may begin directly at Orange Belt after a short skills assessment, allowing them to skip block coding and jump into JavaScript sooner.

Still Curious? Frequently Asked Questions
Is prior coding experience required?

Not at all. Most ninjas start as complete beginners. Our 9-Belt curriculum takes kids from drag-and-drop blocks all the way to JavaScript and C#.

My child is older — do they need to start at the beginning?

No. Ninjas ages 12 and up can begin at Orange Belt (JavaScript) after a short skills assessment, skipping block coding and jumping straight into real code.

How long does it take to complete each belt?

On average, ninjas finish a belt every 3–4 months — depending on their plan (1 or 2 hours per week) and their pace. Some go faster, some take longer. There's no rush.

What is your sensei-to-ninja ratio?

One sensei for every 4–5 ninjas. Small enough that every kid gets focused attention, big enough that they learn alongside peers.

Do you have homework?

No homework. We want CREATE to feel fun, not stressful. Ninjas who want to keep coding at home can log into IMPACT to play their completed projects, build new games in the Sandbox, or remix with our online community. See our parent guide for setup steps.

How do we schedule sessions each week?

All scheduling is done through the Code Ninjas Parents App. Pick any available time slot that fits your family's schedule.

What if we miss a class?

No worries — schedule a makeup session within 90 days through the Parents App. Membership must stay active, and credits expire after 90 days.

Can we switch between plans later?

Yes. Upgrade, downgrade, or switch anytime. Email us at westkatytx@codeninjas.com before your next billing date and changes take effect the following month.
